Estigué al servei de la comtessa de Bredford, per a qui escriví Endmion and Phoebe (1595), i de sir Walter Aston. La seva obra poètica assimilà els gusts i corrents literaris contemporanis: The Harmonie of the Church (1591), The Shepher's Garland (1593), Idea's Mirror (1594) i Idea (1619). Són obres on es resumeix el seu concepte platònic de la poesia amorosa. Escriví llegendes històriques (The Tragical Legend of Robert, Duke of Normandy, 1607, i The Legend of Great Cromwell, 1607), poemes històrics (Mortimeriados, 1596, i England’s Heroical Epistles, 1597) i obres satíriques (The Owl, 1604, i The Man in the Moon, 1606).
