Llicenciat a Kyoto (1947) i doctorat a la Universitat de Wisconsin i a Osaka (1956), fou capdavanter de la genètica de poblacions. Construí un model matemàtic de tot el procés de canvis de freqüències gèniques en poblacions finites. És autor de Diffusion Models in Population Genetics (1964), An Introduction to Population Genetics Theory (1970, amb J.F.Crow) i The Neutral Theory of Molecular Biology (1983), i fou editor de The Future of Man from the Standpoint of Genetics (1974).
