Intervingué a Days of Glory (1944), The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), Duel in the Sun (1947), Gentleman's Agreement (1947), The Great Sinner (1949), The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit i Moby Dick (1956), Designing Woman (1957), The Guns of Navarone (1960), Mirage (1965), Arabesque (1966), I Walk the Line (1970), The Omen (1976), Mac Arthur (1977), The Boys from Brazil (1978), The Sea Wolves (1980), Silent Voice (1988), Old Gringo (1989) i Cape Fear (1991), entre d’altres. El 1962 li fou concedit l’Oscar per To Kill a Mockingbird, i el 1993, l’Os d’Or del Festival de Cinema de Berlín pel conjunt de la seva carrera.
