Actuà des de molt jove en el teatre, però la seva gran oportunitat no arribà fins el 1968 amb Hair. Dos anys després debutà en el cinema i esdevingué la musa de Woody Allen, que li dedicà un film, Annie Hall (1977), amb el qual aconseguí l’Oscar.
