Es doctorà en psicologia social a la Universitat de Columbia l’any 1953 i fou professor emèrit de la Universitat de Yeshiva (Nova York) i professor visitant en diversos centres d’investigació: Stanford, Princeton, Hawaii, Jerusalem, etc. Considerat un dels fundadors de la sociolingüística, és un dels investigadors més destacats en aquest àmbit. És autor d’un gran nombre de publicacions: Readings in the Sociology of Language, Sociolinguistics: A Brief Introduction, Advances in the Sociology of Language, Language and Ethnicity in Minority Sociolinguistic Perspective (1989), Reversing Language Shift (1991), In Praise of the Beloved Language: A Comparative View of Positive Ethnolinguistic Consciousness (1996), Post-Imperial English (1996), The Multilingual Apple: The Languages of New York (1997), entre d’altres. Fou fundador i editor general de l'International Journal of the Sociology of Language i de la col·lecció “Contributions to the Sociology of Language”. La seva formulació del concepte de diglòssia (1967) tingué una gran repercussió en la sociolingüística catalana.
