Ingressà a la Bristol Old Vic Theatre School el 1977. Dos anys més tard formà part del Library Theatre de Manchester. Féu el seu debut teatral amb un muntatge de l’obra Moving, el 1981. A partir de la meitat dels anys vuitanta, compaginà el teatre amb el cinema, i debutà en aquest mitjà amb Dancer with a Stranger (1984), de M.Newell. Cal destacar-ne les interpretacions cinematogràfiques a Empire of the Sun (1987), de S.Spielberg, Enchanted April (1991), de M.Newell, The Crying Game (1992), de N.Jordan, Tom and Viv (1994), de B.Gilbert, The End of the Affair (1999), de N.Jordan, The Hours (2002), de S.Daldry, Spider (2002), de D.Cronenberg, i The Phantom of the Opera (2004), de J.Schumacher. Obtingué un Globus d’Or per la seva interpretació a Enchanted April.
