Format a la Universitat Hofstra (Nova York), s’inicià com a actor teatral, i el 1966 la seva interpretació en The Rose Tattoo de Tennessee Williams obtingué un gran èxit. El 1969 debutà en el cinema (Me and My Brother, de Robert Frank). La seva trajectòria continuà amb prop de dos-cents títols de gèneres molt variats, que l’acrediten sobretot com un dels actors secundaris més destacats. En aquesta categoria aconseguí l’Oscar l’any 1979 per The Deer Hunter (1978), de Michael Cimino. Altres films amb una participació notable o que ha protagonitzat són Annie Hall (1977), de Woody Allen, Pennies from Heaven (1981), de Herbert Ross, The Dead Zone (1983), de David Cronenberg, Brainstorm (1983), de Douglas Turnbull, A View to a Kill (1985), de John Glen, Deadline (1987), de Nathaniel Gutman, True Romance (1993) i Pulp Fiction (1994), de Quentin Tarantino, The Addiction (1995), d’Abel Ferrara, Sleepy Hollow (1999), de Tim Burton, Catch Me If You Can (2002), de Steven Spielberg, Kangaroo Jack (2003), de David McNaly, Around the Bend (2004), de Jordan Roberts, Romance & Cigarettes (2005), de John Turturro, Hairspray (2007) d’Adam Shankman, Seven Psychopaths (2012), de Martin McDonagh, A Late Quartet (2012), de Yaron Silberman, One More Time (2015), de Robert Edwards i The Family Fang (2015), de Jason Bateman. L’any 2016 obtingué el premi honorífic del Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya.
