Fou professor de física a Woolwich (1920-28) i a la Universitat de Londres (1928-49). El 1935 fou elegit fellow de la Royal Society, i el 1950, director de la Royal Institution i del Davy-Faraday Laboratory. Col·laborador de Rutherford,treballà en l’estructura de l’àtom i en els raigs gamma. Publicà The Structure of the Atom (1924), The Mechanism of Nature (1930), Simple Science (juntament amb Julian Huxley, 1935), The Atom and its Energy (1947) i Approach to Modern Physics (1957).
