L’èxit que obtingué a Broadway amb The Petrified Forest (1935) li obrí les portes del cinema. Actor dúctil i de grans recursos dramàtics, intervingué a The Scarlet Pimpernel (1935), Pygmalion (1938) i Gone with the Wind (1939). Realitzà alguns films: The First of the Few (1942) i The Gentle Sex (1943). Desaparegué en un accident d’aviació.
