Professor de les universitats de Harvard i Chicago, i gran viatger, la seva obra reflecteix uns profunds coneixements humanístics i una aguda observació de la vida quotidiana. Excel·lí sobretot en el teatre, amb títols com ara Our Town (1938, premi Pulitzer, obra portada al cinema el 1940 per Sam Wood) i The Skin of Our Teeth (1942, premi Pulitzer), i en la novel·la cal destacar The Cabala (1926), The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1927, premi Pulitzer 1928), The Ides of March (1948), The Eighth Day (1967, National Book Award), Theofilus North (1972), etc. També fou portada al cinema l’obra teatral The Matchmaker (1954), per Gene Kelly, amb el conegut títol de Hello, Dolly! (1968).
