Debutà en sèries de televisió com Hellinger’s Law (1981) i The Killing of Randy Webster (1981). Films com Taps (1981), de H. Becker, Bad Boys (1983), de R. Rosenthal, The Falcon and the Snowman (1984), de J. Schlesinger, o Crackers (1984), de L. Malle, li oferiren la popularitat. Però la consagració li arribà amb films com Colors (1988), de D.
