Es graduà en filosofia a la Universitat de Massachusetts d’Amherst, però el 1969 abandonà els estudis per a emprendre la carrera d’actor. Després d’una breu experiència teatral interpretà petits papers en films juvenils. Destacà amb Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977, R. Brooks), Days of Heaven (1978, T. Malick) i Bloodbrothers (1978, R. Mulligan), però obtingué el definitiu pas a la popularitat gràcies al seu paper a Yanks (1978, de J. Schlesinger). Convertit en un nou sex symbol, protagonitzà American Gigolo (1979, P. Schrader), An Officer and a Gentleman (1982, T. Hackford), Breathless (1982, J. McBride), Cotton Club (1983, F.F. Coppola), King David (1984, B. Beresford), No Mercy (1986, R. Ha destacat per les seves iniciatives humanitàries en favor de pobles amenaçats, especialment dels tibetans. El 2007 rebé un premi a la trajectòria al Festival de Sant Sebastià.
