Format al teatre, actuà en la sèrie televisiva Return to Brideshead i als films The French Liutenant Woman (1980), Betrayal (1982), Moonlighting (1982), Un amour de Swann (1983), The Mission (1986), Dead Ringers (1988), Australia (1989) o Kafka (1991). Fou guardonat amb un Oscar per la seva interpretació a Reversal of Fortune (1990). Posteriorment interpretà Waterland (1992), Damage (1992), The House of Spirits (1993), M.Butterfly (1993), Die hard with a Vengeance (1995), Stealing Beauty (1996), Lolita (1997), Chinese Box (1997), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Dungeons & Dragons (2000), The Fourth Angel (2001), The Time Machine (2002), Callas Forever (2002), The Merchant of Venice (2004), Being Julia (2004), i Kingdom of Heaven (2005).
