Fill dels actors televisius Lloyd i Dorothy Dean Bridges, actuà esporàdicament d’infant amb els seus pares i el seu germà Beau. S'inicià professionalment a la televisió amb el drama protagonitzat pel seu pare Silent Night, Lonely Night (1969). L’any següent debutà al cinema en The Yin and the Yang of Mr. Go (1970) , de B. Meredith, i Halls of Anger, de P. Bogart. Aconseguí una gran projecció en The Last Picture Show (1971), de P. Bogdanovich, a la qual seguiren Fat City (1972), de J. Huston, The Iceman Cometh (1973), de J. Frankenheimer —versió de l’obra teatral d’E. O'Neill—, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), de M. Cimino, Hearts of the West (1975), de H.
