Fundada a la meitat de la dècada del 1990 pel realitzador Steven Spielberg, l’exdirectiu de la Disney Company Jeffrey Katzenberg i el productor musical David Geffen, ha produït títols com Deep Impact (1998), de M.Leder; American Beauty (1999), de S.Mendes; Gladiator (2000), de R.Scott; Small Time Crooks (2000), de W.Allen; What Lies Beneath (2000), de R.Zemeckis; The Mexican (2001), de G.Verbinski; The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001) i Hollywood Ending (2002), de W.Allen; Road to Perdition (2002), de S.Mendes, i obres del mateix Spielberg: Amistad (1997), Save Private Ryan (1998), Artificial Intelligence: A.I. (2001), Minority Report (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002) i The Terminal (2004). Però Dreamworks ha destacat especialment per la competència que ha exercit sobre Disney en el terreny del cinema d’animació, gràcies a títols com The Prince of Egypt (1998), Antz (1998), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Chicken Run (2000), Shrek (2001), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003), Shark Tale (2004) i Madagascar (2005), Bee Movie (2007) i Kung Fu Panda. De 2006 a 2008 s’associà amb Paramount Pictures, i posteriorment amb la corporació índia Reliance ADA Group.
