Director de l’American School of Oriental Research de Jerusalem (1920-29 i 1933-36), explorà nombrosos jaciments, principalment a Palestina. Fou cap de les excavacions de l’American Foundation for the Study of Man a Wadi Beyhan, Hajar Bin Humaid i Timna, a Aràbia (1950-1951) i des del 1958 fou professor de llengües semítiques a Baltimore. De les seves nombroses publicacions destaquen: The Archaeology of Palestine and the Bible (1932), The excavation of Tell Beit Mirsim (1932-43), From the Stone Age to Christianity (1940), Archaeology and the Religion of Israel (1942) i The Bible and the Ancient Near East (1963).
