Fill d’Oliver Cromwell, el succeí el 1658 com a lord protector d’Anglaterra, Irlanda i Escòcia. Sense la forta personalitat del seu pare, no aconseguí de conservar l’aliança entre l’exèrcit i el parlament, i dimití el 1659.
