Amb Flor silvestre (1943) es donà a conèixer com a realitzador. El 1946 fou premiat a Canes el seu film María Candelaria (1943). Cantor poètic del paisatge mexicà i del folklore indígena, fotografiat per Gabriel Figueroa, el seu col·laborador habitual, realitzà els films La perla (1945), Enamorada (1946) i Río escondido (1947). Posteriorment acabà fent només d’actor: La cucaracha (1958), The Night of the Iguana (1963), The Wild Bunch (1968), Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (1973) i Under the Volcano (1983).
