Treballà a la Gran Bretanya i als EUA. Interpretava habitualment el personatge de l’anglès tradicional, lúcid, autoirònic i sovint absurd, tant en films humorístics com seriosos. Ha actuat a Raffles (1939), The Bishop's Wife (1947), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Bonjour Tristesse (1958), Separated Tables (Oscar, 1958), The Guns of Navarone (1960), The Pink Panther (1963), Casino Royal (1966), Death on the Nile (1978), Escape to Athena (1978), The Sea Wolves (1980), etc. Publicà l’autobiografia Bring on the Empty Horses (1975).
