La col·laboració amb el seu amic Charles Montagu fou l’oportunitat per fer-se conèixer com a autor amb The Hind and the Panther Transvers’d to the Story of the Country Mouse and the Town Mouse (1696). Fou poeta amb una gran capacitat de versificació i, dins la seva lírica, cal remarcar els poemes llargs Henry and Emma, Alma or the Progress of the Mind i Solomon on the Vanity of the World, que formen la part més rellevant de la seva producció.
