Format a la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts de Londres, acabada la guerra es dedicà al cinema i adquirí una notable popularitat amb Brief Encounter (1945). També fou dirigit per Carol Reed a The Way Ahead (1944), The Third Man (1949) i An Outcast of the Island (1951). Instal·lat a Hollywood, actuà a Around the World in 80 Days (1956) o The Roots of Heaven (1957), sense renunciar, però, a les seves arrels britàniques, paleses a Sons and Lovers (1960), Mutiny on the Bounty (1961), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), The Battle of Britain (1969), Conduct Unbecoming (1975), etc. També dugué a terme una actuació destacada com a Wagner a Ludwig (1972) i encarnà el vell visionari de Les années lumière (1981).
