Dedicat al gènere còmic, es donà a conèixer en sèries de TV com Sesame Street (1969) o Buffalo Bill (1983), però l’èxit li arribà amb la interpretació a The Mask (1994), de C.Russell, Batman Forever (1995), de J.Schumacher, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), de S.Oedekerk, i The Cable Guy (1996), de B.Stiller. Ha interpretat també Liar Liar (1997), de T.Shadyac, Simon Birch (1998), de M.S.Johnson, The Truman Show (1998), de P.Weir, Man on the Moon (1999), de M.Forman, Me, Myself & Irene (2000), de B. i P.Farrelly, i How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), de R.Howard. En pel·lícules com The Majestic (2001), de F.Darabont, i Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), de M.Gondry, ha volgut ampliar el seu registre interpretatiu cap a matisos més dramàtics. També ha interpretat Bruce Almighty (2003), de T.Shadyac, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) i Fun with Dick and Jane (2005).
