Adoptà el nom definitiu el 1978. Formen part del nucli del conjunt Robert Smith (veu i guitarra), Simon Gallup (baix) i Porl Thompson (guitarra). Altres membres importants són o han estat, a la bateria, Jason Cooper, Lol Tolhurst i Boris Williams, i als teclats Roger O'Donnell i Perry Bamonte. Precursors de l’anomenat rock
sinistre, són especialment famosos per la seva imatge característica de reminiscències punk
