Especialitzat sobretot en el western , interpretà, entre altres films, Fort Apache (1948), Red River (1948), The Quiet Man (1952), The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Alamo (1960), The Man who Shot Liberty Valence (1962), Green Berets (1967), The Undefeated (1968), True Grit (1969, Oscar d’interpretació), Chisum (1970) i Rooster Cogburn (1975).
