Llicenciat en llengües modernes, treballà com a lexicògraf en l’actualització de l’Oxford English Dictionary i feu periodisme i crítica literària.
La seva novel·lística, diversa i original, trenca sovint els motlles del gènere i recorre a l’experimentació. En destaca Metroland (1980, premi Somerset Maugham 1981), Before She Met Me (1982), Flaubert’s Parrot (1984), Staring at the Sun (1986), History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989), Talking it Over (1991, premi Femina 1992), The Porcupine (1992), Cross Chanel (1996), England, England (1998), Love, etc. (2000), The Lemon Table (2002), Arthur and George (2005), The Noise of Time (2016), The Only Story (2018), Elizabeth Finch (2022) i Departure(s) (2026).
Amb el pseudònim Dan Kavanagh, ha publicat algunes novel·les policíaques (Duffy, 1980; Fiddle City, 1981; Putting the Boot In, 1985; Going to the Dogs, 1987).
És també autor dels volums d’assaigs Letters from London (1995), Something to declare (2002), The Pedant in the Kitchen (2003), Through the Window (2012), A Life with Books (2012), Levels of Life (2013), Keeping an Eye Open: Essays on Art (2015), The Man in the Red Coat (2019) i Changing My Mind (2025). En el volum autobiogràfic Nothing to Be Frightened of (2008), elaborà un discurs filosòfic al voltant de la mort de la seva esposa, l’agent literària Pat Kavanagh, víctima d’un tumor cerebral el mateix any.
L’any 2004 li fou atorgat el títol de cavaller de l’Orde de les Arts i les Lletres i el 2021 el premi Jerusalem. Rebé el premi Man Booker el 2011 per la novel·la The Sense of an Ending i l’any 2013 rebé el Premi Internacional Terenci Moix al conjunt de l’obra literària.
