Una de les figures més importants del cinema mut: The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), Broken Blossoms (1919), Orphans of the Storm (1922), amb la seva germana Dorothy Gish (Massilon, Ohio 1898 - Rapallo, Liguria 1968). Amb l’arribada del sonor es retirà per dedicar-se al teatre, i només tornà a actuar al cinema esporàdicament (Duel in the Sun, 1947; The Night of the Hunter, 1956; The Whales of August, 1987).
