Procedent del teatre clàssic, el 1980 guanyà un Oscar a la millor actriu secundària per Kramer vs Kramer (1979), de R. Ha actuat també en telefilms i sèries de televisió, entre d’altres Holocaust (1978) i Angels in America (2003), per les quals rebé els respectius premis Emmy a la millor actriu. Rebé també els premis César (2003), Donostia (2008) i del Festival de Berlín (2012) per la seva trajectòria cinematogràfica. L’any 2023 li fou atorgat el premi Princesa de Asturias de les arts.
