Especialitzat en l’estudi de les poblacions, és professor a la Universitat de Stanford, Califòrnia. Juntament amb la seva muller Anne, ha estat un promotor de la limitació dels naixements i de l’esterilització. Ha publicat, entre d’altres, The Population Bomb (1968), How to be a Survivor (1971), Human Ecology (1973), The Process of Evolution (1974), Biology and Society (1976), The Race Bomb (1977), Introduction to Insect Biology Diversity (1978), The Golden Door: International Migration, Mexico and U.S. (1979), Extinction: The Causes and Consequences of the Disappearance of Species (1981), The Science of Ecology (1987), The Population Explosion (1991), The Stork and the Plow: the Equality Answer to the Human Dilemma (1995), A World of Wounds: Ecologist and the Human Dilemma (1997), molts dels quals escrits en col·laboració, i més de 400 articles científics i de divulgació. El 2009 rebé el premi Ramon Margalef d’ecologia de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
