Ministre de l’Església Congregacionalista, fou professor de crítica bíblica a Manchester (1930-35) i de teologia a Cambridge (1935-39). Per a ell, el cor del Nou Testament (en la tensió entre el coneixement ideal i salvador dels grecs i el futur gloriós apocalíptic del judaisme) és l’escatologia realitzada. Publicà: The Authority of the Bible (1928), The Bible and the Greeks (1935), The Parables of the Kingdom (1935), The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel (1953), Historical Tradition in the Fourth Gospel (1963) i The Founder of Christianity (1970).
