Format en el teatre i en la televisió, s’inicià en la direcció amb comèdies (The Thrill of It All, 1963; Send Me No Flowers, 1964, etc). Amb In the Heat of the Night (1967) fou guardonat amb l’Oscar a la millor realització. Altres films seus són: Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Rollerball (1975), And Justice for All (1979), Agnes of God (1985), In Country (1989), Other People’s Money (1991), Only You (1994), The Hurricane (1999), Dinner with Friends (2001) i The Statement (2003). Obtingué un Os de Plata a la millor direcció (1988) per Moonstruck (1987), pel·lícula guardonada també amb tres Oscar (millor actriu, millor actriu de repartiment i millor guió), dos Globus d’Or (millor actriu i millor actriu de repartiment) i el premi del Sindicat d’Escriptors al millor guió. L’any 1999 rebé un Oscar a la trajectòria.
