És famós per la novel·la satírica i didàctica Euphues or the Anatomy of Wit (1578), seguida d'Euphues and his England (1580), on iniciava l’estil anomenat eufuisme. Escriví peces de teatre: Sapho and Phao (1583), Endimion (1586-87), Love's Metamorphosis (1589), Midas (1589), Mother Bombie (1589-90) i The Woman in the Moon (1594-95), on adaptà la comèdia pastoral italiana.
