A París conegué W.B.Yeats (1886), que l’introduí en la Irish League. També pel consell d’aquest anà a les illes d’Aran, per tal d’estudiar-ne la llengua i els costums. Diversos temes allí recollits l’impulsaren cap al teatre, on debutà amb In the Shadow of the Glen (1903). Creà un llenguatge adaptat a l’escena de temàtica i tradició irlandesa, i enriquí el teatre anglès. De la seva producció cal remarcar Riders to the Sea (1904), The Well of the Saints (1905), The Playboy of the Western World (1907) i Deirdre of the Sorrows (1910).
